Current large language models and generative systems such as Gemini, ChatGPT, LLaMA, Claude, DeepSeek, GPT-4o, Sora, and Midjourney operate as opaque black boxes. They produce impressive outputs but cannot reveal verifiable reasoning chains. Post-hoc Explainable AI (XAI) attempts to reverse-engineer decisions after they occur, yet these explanations are approximations, not true causal paths. This paper introduces Understandable AI (UAI), a framework developed by Jan Klein where transparency is embedded at design time rather than added as an afterthought. Unlike XAI, which focuses on interpreting results, UAI focuses on verifying reasoning before execution. We demonstrate how UAI makes bias structurally impossible, decisions logically traceable, and audit trails human-readable.
